Making it all work together... Thing 23!!!!!!!!

I opened an account with Hootsuite and linked some of my accounts. I tried adding others but it was full s i can only have three and my facebook home and group accounts are considered two different accounts.I added streams and tabs to extend out my social media networks.

I like google alerts ,  if there is something topical or of interest to me it alerts me and i can restrict the times when it is to do so I found that useful.

It can be difficult to keep up with social media sites , so hopefully this will keep mine together on the one viewing dashboard.

Anyo other social media sites I use are the ones that I would have signed up to as I was doing this course. Before this all i was signed up to was facebook and instagram.

I will be interested to see how this works as I have only set up with Hootsuite. So it will be great if this works and I can view these in one browse.

Jackie

Also saying a goodbye as this is my last THING that I will be blogging.

Thanks to all the co-ordinators for Rudai 23 as I have rreally enjoyed doing this immensely.

MOBILE THINGS THING22

HOW THINGS HAVE PROGRESSED!! HAVING NO PRIVILAGE OF POSSESSING AN IPHONE I COULD NOT USE THE APP 'GUM', I WAS SO INTERESTED IN USING IT AS MOST PRODUCTS NOW COME WITH A BARCODE THAT YOU CAN FURTHER BROWSE THE PRODUCT OR COMMENT OR BETTER AGAIN ENTER A COMPETITION OR THEY HAVE VISUALS ATTACHED.

SO I NAVIGATED THROUGH PLAY STORE ON MY ANDROID PHONE AND FOUND A SIMILAR ONE CALLED 'BARCODE SCANNER'. I REALLY ENJOYED HAVING A GO AT THIS SO I SCANNED A FEW BOOK ISBN BARCODES AND YOU CAN SEARCH IF IT IS A PROCDUCT OR BOOK ETC SO THERE YOU HAVE IT AFTER A FEW SECONDS IT SHOWS ME THE BOOK. I CAN WRITE A REVIEW , I CAN LOOK AT OTHER REVIEWS, THE BOOK IS ALSO STAR RATEDIT GIVES BIBLIOGRAPHIC INFORMATION AND REFERENCES TO THE BOOK. YOU CAN ALSO EXPORT THE CITATION OF THE BOOK .

SO LATER I WILL BE GIVING IT A GO USING MY PHONE WITH SOME PRODUCT BARCODE SEARCHES AND SEE HOW IT WORKS.

LOOKED UP THE NEW COURSE 23 MOBILE THINGS, LOOKS GOOD PLUS AFTER DOING THIS I FEEL I WOULD HAVE A BETTER KNOWLEDGE AND I AM SET UP WITH TWITTER INSTAGRAM/FEEDLY/AURASMA AND PINTEREST TO MENTION A FEW THAT ARE LISTED. SO I WILL FINISH UP HERE OVER THE WEEKEND WITH MY FINAL RUDAI !!!, AND I WILL MAKE THE DECISION THEN.

Creating Infographics THING 21

I explored Easel.ly for this task. I found it very limited in what you can do with it. I was trying to use a template and my Title was Science /Technology for Girls. As it was recently science week. I was focusing on statistics for this :The amount of girls doing Science/Tech as a subject at secondary school (chemistry/physics/computers) and going on to third level also highlighting the amount of women in the Science/Technology field in the work sector.

No matter where you turn, the stats are grim. Today, women hold only 27 percent of all computer science jobs, and that number isn’t growing. This is unsurprising when we take into account how many women are actually studying computer science in college; less than 20 percent of bachelor’s degrees in computer science go to women, even though female graduates hold 60 percent of all bachelor’s degrees.
As women continue to make strides in fields like law and medicine, the gap in the tech industry has many wondering exactly what the culprit is. Many chalk up the difference to a lack of female role models in STEM fields to begin with.

Cited from Forbes Woman.

Having tried using Easel.ly as stated above I didn't like the total structure and limitation of it, so I didn't post up what I tried to do as I didn't feel it was visually explanative as an infographic to display my info or my stats. Between using the basic Vhemes(visual themes) anything extra was at purchase price for pro vhemes or objects, So for me I would prefer to use Powerpoint as it is more personalised in a creative way.
However I do believe Infographics are the way forward in the marketing world if done correctly. They are fast at getting the message across and I feel visual works much better with advertising/displays/marketing of well pretty much everything really!

PRESENTATIONS THING 20

I enjoyed doing this. I chose Google Slides to display my presentation. I followed some youtube tutorials on it. A bit fiddly when choosing background colours, line colour etc. but you get the hang of it. The presentation is brief, I used 5 slides to display, but using it and getting used to it was my main concern so that I can use this if needed with something else here in the Library.

Communicating through Photographs Thing 18

IMG_1169_pe This is my photo choice embedded from flicker. I looked at both, with Instagram I feel this would be popular in libraries with the students as this is facebook linked. We use facebook here to inform our students of any up coming events within the college and this seems a successful method to date. Yes I think both would work for advertising any new events within the college, or any new displays. We are working on a display for 1916 so I will suggest using Flickr or Instagram.

Reflection Practice Made Easy - Gibbs Model ...Thing 17

This has been the first 'Thing' that I really have had to go over and over again. It actually made me Reflect a lot on my other blogs ,especially with the depth of reflection that is required with a blog using the Gibbs Model of Reflection/ Learning by doing. I think its a great way to tackle any new job role/ project /task or anything that requires time and effort at least you can follow some guidelines to keep a process flowing. As we are all aware of setting time aside for a task and wander off checking e-mails etc. and getting nothing done efficiently(well at least it can be me at times)

Using this process would be very much applicable with any task that I would have to complete within my library role. I think its a very effective way to ensure we are completing a task efficiently it makes us aware of reading the task in question carefully so that we fully understand whats required. The points outlined Description, Feelings, Evaluation, Analysis, Conclusion and Action plan are very well covered in the Gibbs Model. This is something I would try to apply with further tasks ahead with Rudai 23 and with my current position as a Library Assistant.

Collaboration Tools Thing 16

So having looked at Google Drive and the link to the document in Latin I added in my few Latin pieces!!! Salvete ... Valete... So looking at both of them I would not use them at work myself but I can see the advantages.

Looking at Doodle which is used here through our staff portal for examination times...meeting s etc...
I also looked at collaboration tools on pinterest .. o my god there is so much to look at it the great advantage of it is the ability to pin it for later I will have so much to look at by the end of this course . Unfortunately I am trying to play catch up so i have not got the extra time to keep browsing but i will look for forward to all my pins!!!!

#Advocacy For Libraries Thing 15

Hello all... I have given my opinions on Advocacy for Libraries already as I took part in the Twitter chat on the 6th Sept 8.30-9.30, which I really enjoyed as it was my first ever twitter chat and I also got into the use of the # symbol as we had to use the #Rchat with our replies on the different topics.

Very interesting topic and I thought it was a great way to converse on it through Twitter......

librARi - Augmented Reality Experience for Library# Thing 14

Loving this..

Having looked at various AR apps, I really enjoyed the experience, As you can see above this is my favourite LibrAri . So when will this become a reality ?? As I feel it would be a welcomed one!!!

I have never seen AR used in libraries or used it myself but think its a great idea. I also liked the Anatomy 4D (my kids even liked it more so.!!)
We also tried out Aurasma but it would not work for us as they were mad to see some thing coming to life so to speak. So maybe i will give Layar a try over the weekend, if i get up and going i will update this post ........Wish me luck!

Thing 13

Having looked at the various federations within Ireland, the one I would subscribe to is the( LAI )Library association of Ireland. So I have printed the membership form and I am going to have a look at joining them. This might not be applicable to me on a big scale (or maybe it will) with what I do as a library assistant as it might be geared at Librarians. However, I will give it a go as I feel if anything it will keep me up to date with all that's going on in the Library world......

I have had a look at other ones also CILIP, IFLA which are very interesting also, I did not subscribe but looked to even be included in newsletters etc.

Pinterest have what seems an endless list of professional organisations so I have pinned what I felt as best suited to me. CILIP, LIB Focus... Something I will look at over this week....

Attending Conferences

Thing 12.... Conferences are not things I attend being a library assistant...So I will do task 2..

Having looked up the links ye provided which I found very interesting and surprised of the amount that could of applied to myself. My perception of  conferences were they were for the heads of depts. or serious academics... but on looking at the provided links I found some that I would find interesting and even maybe be applicable to me.

There is one on the 12th of Novemeber at 11am in The John Rylands Library University of Manchester. Its title is New Professional Day.. Its about rare books and special collection group, which i find interesting.

I found this presentation through CILIP, its found under the sub heading for academic libraries.

If it was applicable to me and our Librarian found this of need or of interest to me there would be funding to attend these conferences and iam sure they would schedule me in for this if it was needed or appropiate to me. However it is not something that we have being known to do, so this is my conference of interest.

I feel this would be of interest and would give a knowledge of special collections and rare books.

My fears would be that I would not have enough knowledge and would be out of my depth...... Also taking the advice from(Caroline Rowan)  to bring a tablet to take notes which I could reference at a later time if a link or notes were not provided.

Regards

Jackie

Thing 11

Reflective Practice

I am enjoying the course, so writing this today even though Thing 16 is just out does not look like I have time managed well. However, I feel I am doing ok on it and have not falling too far behind.

I created a bit of a study plan for this(kids are in bed) . Its working so far. Also if i have a quiet time its great that it can be done via my phone or tablet eg.  lunch breaks.

I think though if you are very behind you get to miss out on eg Hangouts/ Twitter chat as you have not got that far so you wont include yourself in these things which are the only way of getting to know how they operate. So I would suggest that people stay somewhat up to date with the course.

Hope this helps others.

Moving on to Thing 12 hopefully this evening!!!

Take care

Jackie

LIVE STREAMING

Live Streaming.....

I enjoyed exploring live Streaming.. Its something that I would not need to use in my daily work routine but I can see the benefits of it. I think its a great idea for streaming different platforms within libraries. I had a look at periscope its a great idea and one I feel would work really well. I viewed TEDx which is another great streaming facility. I watched several streams which I found some interesting and also gave a better idea how all this works. There are a few I pinned for later viewing.. Overall very interesting and well worth creating a live stream with events etc within libraries.

THING 9

Hello fellow Rudai 23 bloggers...

I chose to use Screencast O Matic I really enjoyed it.. I did a little recording of my personal interest Millinery using pinterest just a little demo. I think this is a great idea for adding explanatory links/demos in the library world. I feel it would be a great way to show new technologies etc that are continually been introduced and updated within libraries. Really enjoyed this and I will look forward to showing my colleagues once I return to work next week .

I would recommend this and I look foward to using it myself .

THING 8 Pinterest

Having explored Pinterest I enjoyed it . I created my 5 likes to create a profile of what my interests are and keep a check in to it from time to time. Its great to see Rudai23 on it and is another way of keeping in contact with whats going on plus its great to see other library links and even podcasts on it.. I really enjoy it and even outside of a work level I love to explore my other interests (millinery or anything creative). Being a big glossy magazine lover also  feel I have one at my fingertip always how great!!

I will keep exploring it to see how helpful or useful this would work for us at our library.

Thing 7 PODCASTS

PODCASTS.... I enjoyed listening to the recommended podcasts (oral history series, circulating podcasts).. I also followed other ones via Pinterest. I think its an excellent tool and is a brilliant way to use in an educational way. Once you get into this there is so many to listen to!!!!. I enjoyed Techi teacher and the best 30 Technology and education podcasts but there is so many and I will keep exploring them. I will also encourage my children to use these as there are great educational ones that would suit them.

On a work level I don't use them in what I do at work, but I can't say I will be ruling that out once I return in Sept. after parental leave. Another great tool to explore!

Reflective Practice

Reflective Practice.........Having looked and posted on other blogs , there is a lot I relate to in what others say eg down to the basics of security settings in signing up to what's asked and needed for the course but with great explanation that was dealt with, now like others I'm free to use and enjoy these tools. Doing this course has given me the desire to do more in regards using the tools like hangout air/ podcasts... And now to keep up to date with all this and the interaction with other library workers is great .I'm enjoying reading others feeds and blogs.. Obviously like most things some have excellent expertise and more experience in this field which I find interesting to read their blogs , for me i am enjoying finding my way with all of this. Have to say I would like to get to publish more blogs... Then I might get more reviews.... Here's to me getting more creative with my blogs.....!!!!! on

#Thing4

Well I have to say I am well impressed . Its great getting to know all these things that Google has to offer. I am enjoying exploring all of these extras that I didn't care to use or look at before this. I have tried a hangout but I would be interested if anyone from our group would like to try and do one with me. I will also be keeping an eye out for the next group hangout. What I love is when I can check in when on the go with my smart phone and that I am  not held to my PC or laptop.
Blog again soon

Sunday 12 July 2015

Hello Bloggers,

I work in an academic library and I love it! So how did I get here ? I have always loved books  as a kid I even loved the smell of new books, my parents always encouraged us to read it was a big thing in our home. I studied Business and French at college.. I started out in the banks for a few years. I then delved into a different field and courageously opened up my own business for a while . Never losing my love for the academic side to me I returned to a position I still hold today (gone into my second decade).

I recall the day of my interview and walking through the building I loved the place !!
